ISGMH Faculty Bring in NIH Public Health Grants

Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) Director Brian Mustanksi, Ph.D., and several ISGMH faculty members ranked among the top NIH funding recipients for public health in 2020.

Mustanski was the 7th best funded public health researcher from a pool of 495. He brought in more than $6.4 million in grants for projects focused on sexual and gender minority health, HIV prevention, and COVID-19 over the course of the year.

“This funding from NIH allows me, my colleagues, and ISGMH to pursue research that seeks to understand and improve the lives of LGBTQ people, especially youth and young adults,” said Mustanski

Several other ISGMH faculty members were among the most funded researchers. Michelle Birkett, Ph.D., was among the top 100 public health researchers.

"It's wonderful to see NIH prioritizing sexual and gender minority health, and I am honored to be part of that," said Birkett.

Gregory Phillips II, Ph.D.; Michael Newcomb, Ph.D.; and Lauren Beach, J.D., Ph.D., all ranked among the top 150.

"I’m thrilled to see so many of our faculty rank among the top-funded public health researchers. All of the faculty at ISGMH, regardless of their funding portfolio, are involved in cutting-edge research to understand and mitigate health disparities in sexual and gender minorities, and it is inspiring to see this high level of funding support for our work," said Newcomb.

The NIH funding rankings are compiled by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research and reflect funding granted between October 2019 and September 2020.
