ISGMH Director Brian Mustanski Among the Most Highly Cited and Best-Funded Public Health Researchers
November 9, 2021
Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) Director Brian Mustanski, Ph.D., has been recognized as one of the most-cited researchers in the field of public health. Mustanski ranked 196th out of 48,533 public health researchers globally, landing him a spot among the top 1% of researchers.
“It’s quite an honor to see my name listed among some of the leading public health scholars in the world,” said Mustanski. “Beyond my individual contribution the public health space, I believe this ranking tells a broader story about what kinds of research and kinds of people we value as a field. As a scientist dedicated to furthering the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ individuals and communities, I see this ranking as confirmation that research on LGBTQ populations and on populations at increased risk for HIV are paramount. It was not long ago that finding quality health research that illuminated the lives of LGBTQ people was a challenge, and I’m thrilled every day to help change that."
The database of citation rankings was published in the journal PLOS Biology in an effort to standardize academic citations metrics across researchers and disciplines. Citations play a critical role in understanding the impact specific research and reflect the importance of an individual’s scientific contribution to the broader field.
ISGMH affiliate faculty members Frank Pallela, Ph.D., and Judith Moskowitz, Ph.D., also ranked highly in their respective fields.
Mustanski also landed on Clarivate's 2021 Most Highly Cited Researchers list, which identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their field through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. The researchers on this list are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in Clarivate's citation index.
Mustanski and several ISGMH faculty members also ranked among the top NIH funding recipients for public health in 2020. Mustanski was the 7th best funded public health researcher from a pool of 495. He brought in more than $6.4 million in grants for projects focused on sexual and gender minority health, HIV prevention, and COVID-19 over the course of the year.
