Gregory Phillips II Publishes New Paper Highlighting the Role of Messaging and Prevention Campaigns in HIV Prevention

Director of ISGMH's Evaluation, Data Integration and Technical Assistance (EDIT) research program, Dr. Gregory Phillips II, has published the paper “The Role of Messaging and Prevention Advocacy in PrEP Attitudes, Perceptions, and Uptake Among YMSM and Transgender Women” in The Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes (JAIDS). The paper’s co-authors include: EDIT team members Dylan Felt and David McCuskey; two former EDIT employees, Anand Raman and Peter Lindeman; Christina Hayford from the Third Coast Center for AIDS Research; Jim Pickett from AIDS Foundation of Chicago; and ISGMH Director Dr. Brian Mustanski.

Phillips and the EDIT team leveraged data from ISGMH’s RADAR cohort of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and transgender women (TW) to preliminarily evaluate the impact of Chicago’s homegrown PrEP4Love social marketing campaign on attitudes toward and use of PrEP among these populations. The paper highlights ISGMH’s collaboration with one of our incredible Chicago community partners and ISGMH’s role in advancing the conversation on HIV/AIDS and PrEP on the national stage. You can see highlighted findings below and read the full paper here.

Dr. Phillips is an established leader in LGBTQ+ Evaluation methodology and practice. His work has earned him recognition as an officially elected Co-Chair of the LGBT Issues Topical Interest Group (TIG) for the American Evaluation Association (AEA), and the sole Affiliate Researcher of the Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment (CREA) with an LGBTQ+ focus. In addition, he currently serves as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Evaluation, and as Program Chair for the AEA Social Network Analysis Topical Interest Group.

Through his work as head of the EDIT program and the Evaluation Center in particular, Dr. Phillips’ leadership has allowed him to advance the inclusion of LGBTQ+ voices and emphasize LGBTQ+ cultural competency in the field of Evaluation, both in theory and in his own research.
