In 2017, EDIT faculty and staff developed the idea for EDIT CARES (Community Award for Research and Evaluation Services) as a way to further strengthen our connection to the Chicago community. Traditionally, most of EDIT’s work with community agencies is funded through entities like the Chicago Department of Public Health, primarily centered on HIV prevention and care. We recognized that this limits the types of organizations and programs that we are able to provide services to, thereby restricting our impact on the community. Moving forward, our aim is to extend our services to other organizations serving sexual and gender minority individuals.
The result of our reflection is EDIT CARES. Starting in Spring 2018, EDIT will release an annual request for proposals (RFP) to community organizations in Chicago to fund EDIT staff time to provide pro-bono evaluation, data integration, and other technical assistance services.
2018 Awardee: Chicago House Apprenticeship Program (CHAP)
CHAP is an HIV focused employment program geared toward Black and Latinx gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as well as Black and Latinx transwomen. The program focuses on empowering these individuals to become certified HIV testers and to pursue a career in public health. Not only do they teach the knowledge and skills needed to be an HIV tester, they also help individuals find job placements upon leaving the program. In partnership with EDIT CARES, Chicago House will be able to rigorously evaluate CHAP, refine their curriculum, and showcase the intervention’s impact, thereby attracting additional community partners to hire their qualified program graduates.
Due to limited funding, we are currently only able to provide support to one program per year. However, we hope to significantly scale this project moving forward. To do so, we need your help! Your support of this project will enable us to provide robust services to more community agencies for years to come. You can donate to EDIT CARES here, by entering your donation into the box aligned with the EDIT CARES designation.
If you represent a community agency seeking to apply for or learn more about EDIT CARES, please email email@example.com. We will notify you as soon as the RFP is released and can answer any questions you have.
