Postdoctoral Fellow in Biobehavioral, HIV and Drug Abuse Research

The Northwestern Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to be involved in an ongoing study of HIV and substance use in young gay bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) and transgender women. RADAR is a large longitudinal cohort of YMSM and transgender women that aims to understand multilevel influences on HIV and substance use. The project integrates various data collection activities that aim to examine the effects of biological, network, neighborhood, dyadic and individual-level factors on myriad health outcomes, with an emphasis on HIV and substance use.

The postdoc will participate in a diverse array of research activities, including project-related activities, authoring and co-authoring manuscripts, analysis of existing specimens and data, and collaborating on ongoing biopsychosocial projects and ancillary studies. In addition to the projects described above, there are multiple other existing data sources for analysis and dissemination, including several longitudinal cohort studies of the health and development of sexual minority and gender diverse youth. This position also offers the unique opportunity to work with ISGMH faculty as they seek to build new interdisciplinary collaborative research projects on sexual and gender minority health at Northwestern. Opportunities exist to gain exposure to and mentorship on grant writing. The postdoctoral scholar will be mentored directly by Dr. Brian Mustanski, and co-mentors will include Dr. Richard D’Aquila and Dr. Thom McDade.

ISGMH is the nation’s first university-wide center focused exclusively on LGBTQ health. It provides leadership and infrastructure that promotes innovative, multidisciplinary research to improve the health and well-being of LGBTQ individuals and communities. The mission of ISGMH is to conduct translational research that improves the health of the LGBTQ community. It was founded by Dr. Brian Mustanski in 2015 and has been the home to many federal- and foundation-funded research projects. The Institute’s multidisciplinary team includes six doctoral-level scientists, multiple masters’ level staff, a team of research assistants and data managers, and a full-time program coordinator for administrative support.

Eligibility: Completion of the doctorate prior to the start of the position is required for postdoctoral scholars. It is preferred that the candidate has a doctorate in psychology, biomedical science, health science, or a related field of study. For this postdoctoral position, preference will be given to candidates who have experience in the collection and analysis of inflammatory data as is relates to minority health, stress, HIV, and/or substance use.
