Senior Communications Coordinator – Digital Marketing

Job Summary:

The Senior Communications Coordinator provides project leadership for communications initiatives (e.g. digital, publication, and social media projects) generated from the Northwestern University Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH).  Manage specific communications projects across the entire Institute and ensures that projects meet Institute goals.  Serves as the primary internal communications editor, determining content strategy for email newsletters and announcements to support brand position.

The Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) at Northwestern University was created in 2015 to be a leader in research that improves the health and wellbeing of the sexual and gender minority (SGM) community and foster understanding of the development and experience of SGM people. The Institute provides unique opportunities for high-level research and training for the next generation of SGM scholars, and it utilizes innovative modalities to disseminate knowledge widely to the SGM community, the public at large, scholars, service providers, educators, and policymakers.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Manage communications initiatives for ISGMH, ranging from web communications, content development, publication management, and social media. Lead and advise Institute on the development of effective communications strategies and manage projects, as assigned.
  • Create marketing, communications and educational activities, events, presentations, etc. that build partner relationships and encourage collaboration
  • Coordinate the development of marketing collateral such as programs, posters, invitations, etc.
  • Market & promote Institute using advertising, broadcast email, websites, social media, etc.
  • Analyze information and recommends metrics to determine success.
  • Create associated reports.
  • Serve as the primary communications editor for the Institute, determining content strategy for e-newsletters and announcements. Assesses that communication meets visual and content brand requirements. Produce, test, and deploy specific communications tactics, such as email newsletters.
  • Serve as marketing liaison to communications staff members in the Office for Research, other university departments and programs.

Other duties

  • Review and approve creative, marketing copy, proofs, et. al.
  • May supervise a temporary employee or intern.
  • Other duties as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a major such as communications/marketing, liberal arts, communication, journalism, healthcare, public health, new media, or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum Two years of experience developing and maintaining web content in an academic or corporate environment, including experience with primary ownership of content planning, creation, and maintenance.
  • Prior experience as a marketing practitioner, implementing media strategies, digital strategies or content strategies.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience

  • Master’s degree.
  • 1-2 years of work as a marketing strategist, with experience developing multimedia marketing plans inclusive of offline media, digital, content and events.
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Experience with social media and graphic design
  • Experience with Google Analytics and Google Adwords
