“Science is beyond clear” on transgender identification
Expert says Trump’s decision could “terrorize the transgender community”

CHICAGO — The Trump Administration is considering defining gender as male or female and unchangeable, the most drastic move yet to rollback Obama-era protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law. LGBT health expert and Northwestern University Professor Brian Mustanski says the move is not medically accurate and is designed to terrorize the transgender community.

Dr. Brian Mustanski is the director for the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing, and a professor of medical social sciences in Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Mustanski focuses on the mental and behavioral health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, with a focus on youth. Mustanski was listed as one of the #Pride30 on 2017 NBC News Out list. He can be reached at 312-503-5421 or brian@northwestern.edu

Quote from Dr. Mustanski:

“The Trump administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth. Science is beyond clear that sex and gender are not identical and even that sex is more complicated than what genitalia you have at birth. Genitals, genes and brains don’t perfectly line up for sex and even less so for gender. Such a change is not medically accurate and likely will have no effect but to terrorize the transgender community.”
