Recruitment and Retention

The Recruitment and Retention (R&R) team has an extensive background with varying study designs including cross-sectional, case-control, longitudinal, cohort, and interventional or randomized controlled trials. Most importantly, we staff our recruitment and retention teams with members from the communities that we study.

Team members contribute expertise to help guide research study implementation including:

  • Designing recruitment plans for inclusion of diverse LGBTQ youth and adults
  • Recruiting hard-to-reach sub-populations within SGM-specific research
  • Providing outreach techniques and retention strategies
  • Designing various platforms for participant tracking
  • Culturally and developmentally appropriate participant contact techniques

Project Design and Recruitment/Retention Training
Recruitment:
We have successfully recruited online and in-person for local and national studies of racially and ethnically diverse, LGBTQ-identified youth and transgender populations. We target recruitment efforts at LGBTQ community events and and venues of interest for SGM populations.

Retention:  IMPACT has a record of very high retention rates (typically 80-90% over 5 or more years).  The single most important factor in our experience is our connection with and ability to relate to our participants. We specialize in long-term retention, long-distance retention, and retention after periods of incarceration.

Facilitative Scheduling:  We afford respect and courtesy with all of our study participants, and strive to make our locations accessible and comfortable. Staff and interns receive training on Chicago neighborhoods and transportation routes. We also connect participants to community services for linkage-to-care and support for mental health concerns.

Facebook/social media:  We have expertise in online recruitment through a multitude of social media sites such as Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as dating and hook-up sites like Grindr, Tinder, Scruff, and Jack’d. Our success comes from our knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community, culturally appropriate yet broadly defined target reach, responsive adaptation of ads, and participant tracking. We have successfully recruited young men who have sex with men (YMSM), queer women, transgender individuals, non-binary individuals, minors and adults of all races and ethnicities through online and social media platforms.
