Researchers, students, and community members filled our Stonewall Conference Room last week for ISGMH’s first Affiliate Showcase featuring a panel of five affiliate faculty members: Dr. Lisa Hirschhorn, Dr. Amy Johnson, Dr. Judy Moskowitz, Sarah Penzell, and Nathan Waller. Featuring short presentations and a panel-based discussion, this showcase highlighted the diverse and innovative sexual and gender minority work being conducted by ISGMH affiliate faculty members.
The event began with short presentations from each panel member. Dr. Hirschhorn spoke of her work on her IKNOW project exploring knowledge, attitudes, and experience with PrEP among Chicago women; Dr. Johnson presented on the CURE HIV project, which aims to understand attitudes and perceptions of HIV cure research; Dr. Moskowitz shared her work on the IRISS Study, a positive emotion intervention for people newly diagnosed with HIV; and Sarah Penzell and Nathan Waller presented on BeHeard, a voice and communication program for transgender and gender nonconforming youth. Each presentation emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research in the promotion of SGM health and wellness.
Following the four brief presentations, audience members were invited to ask questions of the panel, leading to a thoughtful discussion and proposals for further collaboration. Audience members prompted conversations about the future of HIV cure research and advocacy, the role of health equity in research, and the importance of social support for transgender and gender nonconforming youth (as well as for their parents).
